Social studies and pedagogy are very important for CTET & TET Exam. In this study notes, we are discussing providing nature & concept of social studies and also discuss the national curriculum framework.
CONCEPT AND NATURE OF SOCIAL STUDIES - Introduction :
Education is a lifelong process and school imparts knowledge of various subjects. Subjects like arts, language, mathematics etc. deal with human values and experiences but it’s a special function of Social Studies to study people as its subject-matter.

Education is a lifelong process and school imparts knowledge of various subjects. Subjects like arts, language, mathematics etc. deal with human values and experiences but it’s a special function of Social Studies to study people as its subject-matter.
Thus, we may define the concept of Social studies as :
- It is the study of the people and their environment.
- It studies how people all over the world live economically and politically independent.
- It enhances the understanding of one’s past to interpret the current trends in order to develop skills so as to survive in a society.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SOCIAL SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES
Social studies are basically concerned with men and his social environment while social science deals with socio-cultural aspects of human behavior. They could be differentiated further as :
- The approaches of both are different. Social science represents an adult approach and taught at high levels while Social Studies represent a child approach and is basically simplified portions of social science.
- Social science gives large knowledge of human affairs while social studies give us insight into various aspects of man and society.
- The main purpose of social science is to discover new truths about human relationships whereas social studies provide guidance to adolescents in their selected learning portions.

Contribution Of Social Studies :
- It establishes the relationship of humans with their geographical and social environment.
- Its main focus of the study is human behaviour.
- It promotes the modern view of social study and education.
- It lays emphasis on adopting new techniques of social behaviour.
NATIONAL CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK NCF 2005
It was proposed by NCERT in India. It provides the framework for preparing syllabi, teaching practices, and textbooks within the school programmes in India. NCF 2005 has influenced the syllabi in a total of 17 states and also been translated into 22 languages.
It’s Implications For Curriculum And Practice :
1. Teaching for construction of knowledge.
2. The value of Interactions
3. Designing new learning experiences so that it goes beyond textbooks.
